Sciatica can be excruciating and debilitating. Sciatic pain has happened to me twice in my life and using CBD for sciatic pain relief helped tremendously.
Symptoms can be extreme pain running down the leg into the feet. Toes can go numb and the arch of the foot can also be very painful.
The nerve pain even caused shooting pains in my gut. All of these symptoms are severe enough to cause temporary or permanent disability if not taken seriously.
There have been claims from sciatica sufferers that CBD oil has provided some relief for their symptoms. CDB can be a cost-effective, zero side-effect and all-natural solution to pain relief and faster recovery combined with physical therapy and chiropractic care.
So What is CBD Oil Anyway?
Before jumping into how CBD oil might help relieve your pain from sciatica, you may have a few questions about this natural supplement. CBD is one of over 100 compounds found in cannabis plants called cannabinoids.
CBD oil is also known as hemp oil or cannabidiol. It is usually derived from industrial hemp plants. These strains of cannabis, unlike marijuana, contain less than .3% of THC. THC is the primary psychoactive compound that is responsible for the “high” of marijuana.
This means that CBD oil DOES NOT have any mind-altering properties.
In addition, CBD is legal in all 50 states. Unlike medical marijuana, hemp oil does NOT require a prescription. It is not regulated by the FDA, and it is sold as a food supplement.
What Causes Sciatica and Its Symptoms?
The sciatic nerve is a long nerve that originates in the lower back and goes down each leg into the feet. If the nerve gets pinched or compressed, it can cause a dull aching, burning, tingling or sharp pain that can be felt at any point along the path of the nerve.
In some cases, the pain will resolve within a few days, but generally, I can take up to a couple of weeks. In many cases it can become chronic, requiring medical treatment from a doctor.
Tens Unit, An Inexpensive Tool To Own
One other helpful inexpensive tool I used was a tens unit. Tens units are nice to own anyway because you’ll find yourself using them as a massage tool on other parts of the body like your neck and shoulders.
I’d encourage you to visit a physical therapist and a chiropractor to learn some exercises you can do at home that will help greatly in speeding up your recovery and reduce pain.
Treating Sciatica With NSAIDs vs CBD
One of the complexities which makes pain from sciatica so difficult to treat is that it is often a combination of two different kinds of pain, nociceptive and neuropathic.
Nociceptive pain is caused when nerves are reacting to tissue damage, sending signals to the central nervous system that something is wrong.
Neuropathic pain is when the nerves themselves are damaged, usually through disfunction, damage, or compression.
The first line of treatment for sciatica is often NSAIDs, a class of drugs that reduces inflammation. Unfortunately, they are widely known to only reduce nociceptive pain.
Neuropathic pain, on the other hand, is often treated with antidepressants and anticonvulsants.
Both classes of drugs have significant side effects, particularly when used over the long term to treat chronic pain. These can include increased risk of heart attack, liver damage, ulcers, and other significant negative health outcomes.
In my personal experience, NSAIDs don’t help at all, and because I have had leaky gut/Crohns, NSAIDs causes internal bleeding.
CBD Has Few Known Side Effects
CBD has few known side effects and there is scientific research that supports its ability to alleviate both neuropathic and nociceptive pain, as well as reduce inflammation.
It does this by working with the body’s endocannabinoid system. It’s a series of receptors that work with the central nervous system to regulate a large number of natural processes including pain, skin health, and digestion to name just a few.
However, I want to emphasize that the research is still in the early stages, and the role of other cannabinoids such as THC in the modulation of pain remains an active area of study.
Although the endocannabinoid system is clearly implicated as one factor in the modulation of pain in the body, CBD may work best in combination with traditional medications.
Keto Diet Also Reduces Inflammation
I have also found that creating a daily habit of very low carbohydrate diet, using red light therapy and drinking pure therapeutic ketones will eliminate a lot of inflammation, and your body will thrive.
If you have a higher body fat percentage, this is creating additional pain from carrying around all that extra weight on your joints.
I lost 100 pounds in 2012 using the keto diet, and I have never felt better, outside of this recent sciatic flare-up.
Sometimes a surgical option is the recommended course of treatment for some kinds of sciatic pain, potentially preventing further degeneration.
That is why working with a doctor to develop the best overall pain management plan for you is the first thing to do if you are experiencing pain from sciatica.
Avoiding Pain Killers Such As Opioids
One of the most interesting research findings is that cannabinoids may enhance the pain-blocking power of topically applied opioids such as morphine.
This may allow some folks that have been prescribed topical opioids to treat Sciatica to potentially reduce the amount of this addictive narcotic while still getting significant relief from spinal pain.
While the FDA has not yet approved prescription CBD cream for Sciatica, some people may find that a high-quality CBD oil for sciatica helps with pain management. As always, it is important to work with your doctor for any serious medical condition.
How to Take CBD for Sciatica Pain
If you decide to try CBD sciatica products, you have a few options on how to take it. There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution.
The four most common ways to take cannabidiol include dropping a few drops of the oil under the tongue (sublingual tinctures), CBD capsules which are taken orally, CBD creams, or sublingual sprays.
My review of the best CBD products for sciatica includes my top selection of each of these four ways to utilize CBD, including the advantages of each.
However, it should be noted that everyone can experience the effects differently, so it may be worth experimenting to learn what method works best for you.
CBD Dosage for Sciatica
Dosing CBD products can be tricky because the effective dose can be impacted by several different factors including your body size, experience using CBD, other medications you are taking. The type of relief you are looking for will also depend on the dosage.
The general wisdom is to start low and increase the dose slowly. Keep in mind that it is very common for new users of CBD oil to take it for several days before it starts to work.
This is because if you have never used cannabis-based products, your body may not have enough of the receptors ready to make use of the cannabinoids found in hemp.
Reputable manufacturers of CBD products will provide general dosing guidelines that are representative of the concentration of their product and the average CBD user.
Start on the lower end of their dosage guidelines, increasing to the higher end over the course of several days.
Always work with your pain management doctor to make sure you won’t be interfering with the action of the other medications you are taking.
In addition, pregnant and nursing women should avoid using CBD oil until more research can establish its safety in these contexts.
Best CBD Oil for Sciatica
CBDPure is an excellent source for CBD oil.
Unlike some of the CBD companies out there, they keep their product line limited to these four popular methods for consuming CBD oil. They focus on developing a high-quality full-spectrum product from special strains of hemp with genetics that produce hemp that is very high in CBD.
They have four great products products:
Hemp Oil Tinctures
If you are interested in faster relief, my advice is to try the tinctures first. The way you use them is to drop the recommended amount of CBD oil under the tongue, holding the oil there for 30-60 seconds before swallowing.
This way, the cannabinoids in this oil absorb directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. It is usually faster and makes more use of the CBD because it has higher rates of absorption than orally consuming the oil.
When using CBD oil for sciatica pain relief, the tinctures may be the fastest way to get relief, but some people do prefer the capsules for a few reasons.
First, they offer a very consistent dose, 25mg per soft gel cap. Second, they are more convenient, adding one or two capsules a day to your regular medication schedule.

CBD Swift Sublingual Superior Delivery System
SWIFT is a sublingual spray containing cannabidiol (CBD). While many CBD products also contain THC and other phytocannabinoids, SWIFT is formulated using a CBD “isolate” which is the purest form of CBD.
It is therefore non-psychoactive, non-habit forming, and safe to use daily with no side effects whatsoever.
Syncing with your body’s endocannabinoid (EC) system, SWIFT has vast health implications. The EC system interconnects the body’s circulatory, nervous, digestive, hormonal, immune, reproductive, and muscular systems.
As such, the EC system is arguably the most critical physiological network in the human body. Its receptors, called cannabinoid receptors, are found all throughout the body.
That’s why when CBD enters your bloodstream, it begins stabilizing, strengthening and nourishing various aspects of your mental and physical health. This happens in the short term as well as over extended periods of time with cumulative effects that continue optimizing your body’s wellness and performance.
In order to maximize the bioavailability and CBD absorption, the SWIFT formula is atomized and broken down into tiny particles that can be easily absorbed through the lining of your mouth.
This bypasses the metabolization process that diminishes the efficiency of traditional CBD methods and gives you a far more effective product.
SWIFT Works Within 2-3 Minutes
In fact, SWIFT advanced delivery system starts working within 2-3 minutes of consumption, whereas traditional CBD products can take anywhere from 10-40+ minutes.
