These 5 edible flowers are not only pretty colors in nature that you get to experience, but they look and taste great in your meals. There are many people that love flowers because they are edible.
Not every flower can be eaten though, as some are toxic. But with some know-how, you can find very specific petals that are meant to be used in cooking and eaten. Farmers’ markets and Whole Foods are good places to look at.
Make note that you should never eat flowers that are from a florist because it is more than likely they were chemically treated.
Petals as Food?
There are certain flower petals that have unique flavors. They also have different textures that can enhance your cooking. The flavors range from sweet to spicy and they are good for you! Petals are full of minerals that include potassium for your heart and flavonoids which are an immune-boosting antioxidant.
While there are many here are a few to start your cooking ideas!
Flavors do depend on not just type, but color, and soil conditions also. Rose flavor suggests the flavor of strawberries and green apples. They are sweet, and some note with many subtle undertones that range from fruit to mint to spice. Top some ice cream with it as a treat.
This is the most common of the edible flowers. Their blossoms have a sweet, spicy flavor that some say is very similar to watercress. It is a great addition to jalapenos in guacamole.
Dianthus taste like the spice clove. The earthiness is the thing people love about it. It is often added to fried rice.
Orchids have a unique texture that is a lot like iceberg lettuce. Have some fun by adding this as a crunchy feature in some steamed rice.
There is a slightly sweet green favor, or some often describe it as a grassy flavor. Try adding them to cake batter for fun color! You can also use the pansy petals as a garnish, in green and fruit salads.
